When I coached juniors, I learned quickly that you cannot will a student into a good serve. You can only break the skill into pieces small enough to win, give one correction at a time, and let them earn the result themselves. Push too hard for the outcome and they tighten up and miss. The same is true of a buyer. Push for the close and they tense, hesitate, and walk.
Closing without closing
So what replaces the close? Teaching. When you spend the conversation helping a buyer understand what they are actually deciding, the decision makes itself. There is no dramatic close because there is nothing left to overcome. You have trained them to confidence, and confident people decide. This is the entire idea behind my keynote, Trained, Not Sold.
