Questions to Ask Before You Book a Keynote Speaker

Before you book a keynote speaker, a handful of questions will save you from the most common and most expensive mistake in event planning, a talk that does not fit the room.

Ask about tailoring

The single best predictor of a great keynote is whether the speaker will customize it. A speaker who delivers the same talk everywhere will deliver an average talk at your event.

Ask about outcomes

Push past how the audience will feel and ask what they will be able to do. A clear, concrete takeaway is the difference between entertainment and impact.

Ask the practical questions

  • What is your all inclusive fee, and how is travel handled?
  • How do you prepare and learn about our audience?
  • Can you provide formats from a keynote to a half day workshop?

For reference, my own speaking fee is a flat five thousand dollars, all inclusive, with travel invoiced separately at cost when an event is outside Chicago. Clarity up front makes everyone’s job easier.
