People ask me how to play the long game as if there is a trick to it. There is not. The long game is just a lot of ordinary days, stacked patiently, until one day you look up and the stack is tall.
The unglamorous truth
Nobody builds an endurance base, a body of work, or a trusted reputation in a burst. You build all three the same way, by doing a small honest amount on the days you feel like it and the days you do not, especially the days you do not.
The secret is that there is no secret. There is just tomorrow, and whether you show up for it.
I have finished races I had no business finishing, not because of any single heroic effort, but because I had quietly put in hundreds of unremarkable training days that no one saw and no one applauded.
Your stack
Whatever you are building right now, a career, a craft, a relationship, a body you can rely on, it is being built in days like today. Not the dramatic ones. The ordinary ones. So make today a good brick, and then go make another one tomorrow.
That is the whole game. It always was.
